Ectropion
Conveniently located to serve Fort Myers, Naples, and Bonita Springs

Ectropion is a condition where an eyelid turns out or sags. Ectropion leaves the eye exposed and irritated and excessive tearing is common. For treatment of ectropion, Fort Myers patients turn to experienced ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Stephen J. Laquis.

The condition may arise as a result or aging, facial nerve paralysis, trauma, scarring, or previous surgeries.

Types of Ectropion

Ectropion presents in four main types:

  • Involutional – This type occurs as a result of sagging skin on the eyelid.
  • Mechanical – This type occurs due to a mass in the region.
  • Paralytic – This type occurs when there is less support for the lower eyelid from the orbicularis muscle.
  • Cicatricial – This type occurs when there is a contraction of the anterior lamella and can be caused by many conditions.

Surgical Ectropion Repair

Surgical repair often involves tightening of the lid. The surgical session usually takes 30 minutes to an hour to perform. At the start of this process, anesthesia is administered to ensure a comfortable and pain-free surgery. Next, a very small incision is made in the affected lid, and tissue is removed at the outside corner.

If necessary, scar tissue may need to be removed, and possibly a skin graft may be done. Grafts can be taken from areas such as the upper eyelid and behind the ear.

“He did a wonderful job”

I would highly recommend Dr Laquis. He did a wonderful job on my upper and lower lids. He was very compassionate and listened to me and takes sincere interest in his patients. I was completely surprised when i called the office two days after surgery with a question and he called me back directly to speak with me himself. I found that comforting. He was extremly professional during the whole process.. I have had other friends who has used him and are completly satisfied, as I.

Recovery After Surgical Repair

A patch may need to be worn immediately after the procedure, but just overnight. An antibiotic ointment may be prescribed. Keep the area dry for at least 5 days.

Warm compresses can be used to reduce post-surgical bruising and swelling in the region. Sun exposure should be avoided. Avoid physically taxing activities like heavy exercise or sports. Do not wear makeup or drink alcohol until recovery is complete.

The Cost of Surgical Ectropion Correction

When it comes to surgical procedures, cost varies based on the details of each unique case. The price of surgical ectropion repair depends on the techniques required and the amount of time needed to perform the corrective procedure.
